Avenir Font Adrian Frutiger created Avenir in 1988 after years of studying sans serif fonts. According to an interview with Linotype, Frutiger claimed it was his responsibility to design a linear sans-serif font that reflected both Erbar and Futura, yet would also take advantage of stylistic developments from 20th century style.
Avenir in French means “future”, and indicates that this typeface shares its name with Futura in some aspects. But like Futura, Avenir does not conform strictly geometrical standards – featuring thicker horizontal strokes than usual and not an exact circle for its “o”. Additionally it features shorter ascenders for better reading performance as well as providing Avenir an appealing and sensible appearance when used for texts as well as headlines.
