Baskerville Font is a serif font designed by John Baskerville (1706-1775), and was cut by John Handy in Birmingham in 1757. Baskerville, a transitional font, was designed to refine what is now known as old-style typefaces, particularly those of William Caslon, his most famous contemporary.
Baskerville’s typeface is the culmination of many experiments. Baskerville was a wealthy industrialist, who began his career as an author. He sought to create new, higher-quality printing methods, and also developed finely pressed paper with a smooth surface and high-quality ink.
