Frutiger Sans Font was asked in 1968 by Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris to design an airport signage and direction system using his popular Univers Font family of fonts. But instead he created a new sans serif font specifically tailored for the requirements of legibility in airport signage – easy recognition of angles and distances of walking and driving directions.
Font that was developed to complement contemporary airport architecture was developed.
